February 20-21, University of California, Berkeley

Hermanas Unidas de UC Berkeley cordially invites you to the 2016 HaU Statewide Conference proudly hosted on our campus.

This year's theme will be:

Deepening Our Roots, Cultivating our Quinto

The theme for this year reflects upon the idea that, as Hermanas Unidas continues to expand and progress, we still remember where we come from. Deepening our roots expresses the idea that as individuals and as a collective we should remember the history of Hermanas Unidas and our personal history. We will continue to deepen our values and pillars regardless of changing times. Cultivating our quinto expresses the idea that we will continue to flourish and thrive as Hermanas, scholars, and professionals while we keep the meaning of the Quinto Sol with us.

Bringing it Back to Berkeley...

In the Spring semester of 1994, five inspiring young women: Zuleyka Heredia, Ricki Robles, Amelia Schustz, Erica Solorzano and Bernadette Vargas came together to establish one of the first Chicana/Latina groups at the University of California, Berkeley. These five women recognized the limited amount of support and resources for Chicana/Latinas on the university campus and resolved to fill the void.

With this year's conference, we hope to honor these amazing women by reflecting on the work they began at UC Berkeley. They saw that this institution lacked support and resources for Chicanas and Latinas. Due to their observations and experiences they knew they wanted to challenge that and create this safe space. They never would have imagined Hermanas Unidas would be what it is today. We are so thankful that they began this journey and that it spread throughout the state due to the same reasons it was founded.

We look forward to seeing you at this year's conference and remember...
